A missing tooth rarely stays a "small" problem for long. What starts as one empty space can quietly shift your bite, strain the teeth on either side, and (over months or years), even change the shape of your jaw. If you've been putting off doing anything about a gap, here are five signs worth paying attention to.
This is usually the first clue, and the easiest to ignore. If you've caught yourself steering food to the "good side" of your mouth without really thinking about it, your bite has already adjusted around the missing tooth, and that adjustment tends to get more pronounced the longer it goes unaddressed.
Teeth next to a gap often end up doing extra work they weren't designed for. If a neighbouring crown or bridge has started to feel loose, or needs frequent repair, it may be a sign that the surrounding teeth are under more pressure than they should be.
This one you won't notice yourself. It only shows up on a dental X-ray. Once a tooth is missing, the jawbone beneath that space naturally begins to lose density over time, simply because it's no longer being stimulated by a tooth root. This is one of the main reasons dentists recommend planning an implant sooner rather than later: the more bone is available, the more securely an implant can be anchored.
If you wear a removable denture and it's started slipping, rubbing, or needing adhesive more often than before, it's often the underlying bone changing shape. Not the denture itself. An implant-supported option can offer a more stable, permanent alternative.
A crack that extends below the gum is usually not repairable with a filling or crown alone, and the tooth is often better replaced than saved. This is exactly the kind of finding that turns up during a routine check-up, which is one more reason regular visits matter even when nothing feels obviously wrong.
None of these signs mean you need to rush into treatment tomorrow, but they are worth a conversation. The earlier a gap is assessed, the more options are usually on the table, and the more bone is typically available to work with.
